Our Wine of the Month for March 2010 is the 2007 Ferngrove Dragon Shiraz from the Frankland River area of Western Australia. This is a high quality Aussie Shiraz for £13.95.
Crimson in colour, it has a bouquet of blueberry and dark plums with hints of rosemary and spice. On the palate complex and layered, this dense and opulent Shiraz dispalys blueberry and spice with a lick of liquorice, finishing with long, fine tannins.
This wine epitomises all the qualities of a good Shiraz. Try it with rosemary-infused rack of lamb and seasoned vegetables.
The Ferngrove 5 star winery is situated in Frankland River, some 360 kms south of Perth in Western Australia, and was established in 1998 by Ferngrove founder Murray Burton. Murray's faith in this unique vineyard region was well founded. Thanks to its location 90 kms from the coast, between the cooling influence of the converging Southern and Indian oceans, the region has a cool climate that allows grapes to ripen with remarkable consistency from year to year.
Frankland River is one of Australia’s fastest growing wine regions. Although viticulture began in the region in 1969, it has only more recently become known as a significant producer of premium quality Western Australian wines. It has a growing reputation for Shiraz.
