Now our long hot summer is over (!) we have selected a couple of interesting wines from the sunshine island of Mallorca for our October wines of the month. Produced by Macia Batle, predominantly from local grape varieties, the red is a gently spicy 2004 Crianza and the white a stunningly different off-dry wine, excellent with food.
Macia Batle is Mallorca's second largest wine producer and is responsible for some of the island's most interesting and rewarding wines. 50 hectares of estate vineyards, principally in the Binissalem DO, are planted with local varieties, supplemented with a little Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
The wines produced are of real substance and individuality with wild berry fruit characters, warm smoky undertones and a structured finish - almost more Italian than Spanish.
The red sells for £11.50 and the white for £11.20. Both are well worth trying. Enjoy!
